History of the Calvin Klein brand
Born to Hungarian Jewish immigrant parents in 1942, Calvin Klein grew up in the Bronx, New York. From a young age, he was passionate about drawing and sewing: he attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. After working for five years in different stores, he became the protégé of the French baron Nicolas de Gunzburg, who introduced him to the fashion world. It was in 1968 that the designer and his childhood friend Barry K. Schwartz partnered and opened a women's coat store. Very quickly, the business expanded and the fashion house then offered a complete sportswear collection for women. In 1979, the stylist created the cK Calvin Klein Jeans line for women, men, juniors, and children. The American brand then made a striking impression with provocative communication: fashion shows of models in briefs, suggestive advertising campaigns with Brooke Shields... The same year, the brand diversified into perfumes with its first Calvin Klein perfume for women. In 1982, the launch of the Calvin Klein lingerie and underwear range, first for men then for women, was a dazzling financial success. Lines of accessories and eyewear were launched in the 90s. Following the sale of his company to the American textile group Philips-Van Heusen Corporation in 2002, Calvin Klein retired from collection design in 2003.
